Phantom
Phantom is a self-custodial crypto wallet app, built around Solana, that also supports Ethereum, Bitcoin and other networks and offers swaps and perps.
Also known as Phantom Wallet · Phantom Technologies
The short answer
Phantom Technologies, Inc. says the app has more than 20 million users as of October 2026, and it never holds users' keys. What it charges is the main thing to understand: most token swaps carry a 0.85% Phantom fee on top of network costs, and perps, cards and bank transfers have their own fees. The wallet's source code is not public, so its security depends on two published audits and the company's word.

What Phantom is and who is behind it
Phantom is a wallet: an app that creates and stores the private keys for your crypto addresses on your own device and lets you sign transactions with them. It runs as a mobile app on iOS and Android and as a Chrome browser extension, and it connects to decentralized apps on the networks it supports.
The company behind it is Phantom Technologies, Inc., which publishes the terms of use under California law. Its About page says a group of engineers and designers started it in January 2021, raised a $9 million Series A from investors including a16z, Variant and Jump Capital in July 2021, and raised $150 million in January 2025 in a round co-led by Sequoia Capital and Paradigm at a $3 billion valuation. Brandon Millman is CEO, Francesco Agosti CTO and Chris Kalani CPO. Phantom has no token of its own; anything sold as a "Phantom coin" is not from the company.
Over 2025 and 2026 the app added trading products: perpetual futures, prediction markets, tokenized stocks and a dollar account called Cash with a Visa debit card. The wallet itself remains free to download.
Supported networks and features
As of October 2026 Phantom supports nine networks: Solana, Ethereum, Bitcoin (Native SegWit and Taproot addresses), Base, Polygon, BNB Chain, HyperEVM, Robinhood Chain and Arc. Solana is always on, and the others can be switched off in settings. Arbitrum, Optimism, Avalanche, Unichain and Linea are not supported, and Phantom says tokens sent there can be recovered with another EVM wallet. Phantom ended Sui support on 24 September 2026; Sui assets remain on the Sui chain and can be reached by importing the same recovery phrase into a wallet that supports Sui. Custom networks cannot be added.
- Swaps on one network and cross-chain swaps routed through third-party bridges (LI.FI, Relay, deBridge, Garden), with the cheapest quote chosen by default.
- SOL staking, either natively with a validator or as PSOL, Phantom's liquid staking token.
- Perps powered by Hyperliquid, with up to 40x leverage on 200+ markets.
- Prediction markets, offered in the US through Kalshi with identity checks, and as a separate World markets product elsewhere.
- Cash: a self-custodial Solana account holding CASH, a dollar stablecoin issued by Bridge Building Inc, with bank transfers and a virtual debit card in the US.
- Hardware signing with Ledger Nano X, Stax and Flex over Bluetooth, or Nano S, S Plus, Stax and Flex by cable on the extension. Trezor and Tangem are not supported.
Phantom fees
The wallet is free, and sending tokens costs only the network fee. Phantom earns money on trades. The figures below come from its help center as of October 2026, and the app shows each fee before you confirm.
Phantom does not publish its prediction-market fee as a fixed rate; it appears in each quote. Card purchases in the US carry no Phantom fee, while international purchases may.
| Action | Fee |
|---|---|
| Token swap (most swaps, same or cross-chain) | 0.85% Phantom fee + network fee (+ bridge fee if cross-chain) |
| Perps: open, add margin, close | 0.095% (0.05% Phantom + 0.045% Hyperliquid) |
| Perps: first deposit or first withdrawal | 1 USDC flat (Hyperliquid) |
| PSOL liquid staking | 4% of staking rewards; 0.1% to unstake |
| Add Cash by debit card | 1.75% |
| Add Cash by credit card | 3.50% |
| Add Cash by direct deposit / domestic wire | 0.30% / 1.00% |
| Withdraw Cash by standard ACH | Free |
| Withdraw Cash by fast ACH | $1.00 + 0.75% (minimum $1.50) |
| Swap USDC, USDT, USDG or PYUSD into Cash | Free |
Is Phantom safe? Custody, code and audits
Phantom is self-custodial. The keys come from either a 12-word Secret Recovery Phrase or, for wallets created with a Google or Apple account, a login-based backup that can also be exported as a recovery phrase. On a phone the wallet is locked by Face ID, fingerprint or PIN; in the extension, by a password. Phantom says it does not store your PIN, phrase or keys, and that seven wrong PIN attempts delete the encrypted backup on the device.
The wallet app is closed source. Phantom's GitHub holds SDKs, its phishing blocklist and two third-party audit reports, from Kudelski Security (2021) and Least Authority (2024), but not the app code that handles keys. Its bug bounty runs on Cantina, and its security page cites rewards of up to $50,000 for flaws that could lose user funds. Built-in protections include transaction previews, scam warnings and spam-token burning, and Phantom's privacy policy says its systems are not designed to associate a user's IP address with a wallet address, username or email.
The record shows no breach of Phantom's own systems. In August 2022 about $4 million was drained from Solana wallets; the breach was traced to the Slope wallet, and Phantom said its users who lost funds had shared keys with Slope. In October 2024 an outage during a large airdrop showed some users wrong balances for a few hours, with no reported loss.
Risks in plain terms
Most losses in a self-custody wallet come from the user's side, not from the wallet's code. The common ones are covered in our guide to recovery phrase mistakes.
- Lose the phrase and every signed-in device, and the funds are gone; Phantom cannot restore access.
- Malicious approvals and address poisoning can drain a wallet even when the app works as designed.
- Perps and prediction markets can lose the full stake, and perps balances sit on Hyperliquid, not in your Phantom wallet.
- Fake apps and extensions: download only from phantom.com/download or the official app stores.
- A hot wallet on an internet-connected device is more exposed than a Ledger or other hardware signer.
Getting started, adding money and cashing out
Download the app or the Chrome extension from phantom.com/download, then create a wallet with Google or Apple or with a recovery phrase, or import an existing one. No KYC is needed for the wallet. In the mobile app, the Deposit button offers funding by card, bank, Apple Pay or Google Pay into Cash, or by receiving crypto from another wallet or exchange.
To cash out, US users can withdraw a Cash balance to a bank account by ACH. Everyone else sends tokens to an exchange that supports the token and network, sells there and withdraws to a bank; Phantom's help center lists Coinbase, Kraken, Binance and others. Phantom warns against sending CASH straight to an exchange that does not list it. Bank transfers, direct deposit and the debit card require identity checks handled by Stripe.
Leaving Phantom is simple because it is self-custodial: export the recovery phrase or private keys and import them into any compatible wallet, or send funds to a new address. Removing the app does not move or destroy the funds, which stay on-chain under the same keys.
Phantom support and impersonation
Support is in English through in-app chat and a chatbot called Sarah, which can open a ticket that is then answered by email. Phantom says it has no phone number or public support email, never contacts users first, never sends direct messages on social media, and never asks for a recovery phrase, PIN or funds. Any "Phantom support number" found in search results or on blog pages is a scam. Service status is published at status.phantom.com.

Outcome not documented
About $4.08 million was drained from 9,230 Solana wallets. Solana developers traced the breach to the Slope wallet. Phantom said it found no evidence its systems were compromised, and that the affected Phantom users had moved keys to or from Slope.

Questions people ask
Is Phantom a custodial or a cold wallet?
Neither. Phantom is a self-custodial hot wallet: you hold the keys, and they live on an internet-connected phone or computer. It is not a cold wallet, but you can connect a supported Ledger so keys stay offline and Phantom only builds and displays the transactions. Our guide on [choosing between hardware and software wallets](/articles/hardware-wallet-or-software-wallet) covers the trade-off.
Does Phantom report to the IRS?
Phantom's terms and the help pages we read do not describe any tax reporting for the self-custodial wallet. Its taxes page instead points users to partner software (Awaken, Summ, CoinLedger and CoinTracker) with discounts for Phantom users. Cash features that need identity checks run through Stripe and Bridge, which have their own obligations. On-chain activity is public either way, so keep your own records.
Can I add a custom network or my own node to Phantom?
No custom networks can be added: Phantom supports only the networks it has integrated, and its help center does not document a setting for your own RPC node. That means you rely on Phantom's infrastructure and its privacy policy. This and other trade-offs are covered in [how Phantom compares with other software wallets](/ratings/best-software-wallets/phantom).
Why does Phantom say a feature is unavailable in my country?
Perps, prediction markets and tokenized stocks are limited by jurisdiction. Perps, for example, are not offered in the United States or United Kingdom. Phantom says an availability message does not affect your funds, and you can still send, receive and swap. Cash is available in most countries through the mobile app but not in jurisdictions sanctioned by the US, while its bank features are US-only.
