What is Ripple USD (RLUSD)?
RANK #45Ripple's own dollar stablecoin, issued under a New York trust charter and live since December 2024 on both the XRP Ledger and Ethereum. Around $2.4bn in circulation by August 2026. It is not a replacement for XRP and not a competitor to it — RLUSD is the dollar leg of a payment, XRP is the bridge between currencies, and Ripple wants both in the same transaction.

How Ripple USD works
Ripple USD is a dollar stablecoin issued by Ripple itself, backed one-for-one by a segregated reserve of cash deposits, short-term US Treasuries and cash equivalents. It launched in December 2024 after the New York Department of Financial Services approved it, and it runs natively on two chains at once: the XRP Ledger and Ethereum.
The dual issuance is deliberate rather than opportunistic. The XRP Ledger side serves Ripple's payments business, where settlement finality in seconds and negligible fees are the product. The Ethereum side exists because that is where institutional DeFi, tokenised treasury funds and the custody infrastructure live. Ripple is not choosing a chain; it is placing the same instrument in both rooms.
The regulatory shape
A NYDFS limited purpose trust charter is the same regulatory form Paxos operates under, and it is a meaningfully higher bar than an offshore attestation. It brings reserve composition requirements, examination and the obligation to redeem. It also means Ripple can freeze an address when legally directed — the price of that charter, and one every regulated issuer pays.
What RLUSD is used for
RLUSD versus XRP: they do different jobs
This is the question people actually arrive with, so take it head on. XRP is a volatile bridge asset: in a cross-border payment it exists for seconds, converting one currency into another without either side pre-funding an account. RLUSD is a stable claim on a dollar that someone can hold for a week without caring where the market went.
A corridor can use both. A payment leaves in euros, bridges through XRP, and lands as RLUSD that the recipient holds until they need it. RLUSD does not compete with XRP for that job because it cannot do it — a dollar token is not a bridge between two non-dollar currencies without a dollar leg in the middle. What RLUSD does replace is the correspondent bank account the recipient would otherwise have needed.
What it is used for
- Settlement and payout leg in Ripple Payments corridors, the use it was built for.
- Collateral and cash leg for tokenised funds and treasury products on Ethereum.
- Trading pair on major exchanges, though its volume share is small against USDT and USDC.
- Dollar liquidity on the XRP Ledger's native DEX, where it is the largest regulated dollar token.
RLUSD tokenomics and supply
There is no emission schedule. RLUSD is minted on deposit and burned on redemption, so supply is a straightforward measure of how much demand Ripple's distribution has created.
From zero in December 2024 to roughly $2.37bn by August 2026 is fast growth in absolute terms and small in relative ones: it is a fraction of USDT's float and well behind USDC. The honest framing is that RLUSD is an institutional instrument that has not yet been adopted at retail, growing through corridors and treasury desks rather than exchange trading.
You will see a claim circulating that Ripple projects RLUSD at a $2 trillion market cap by 2028. That figure belongs to forecasts of the total stablecoin market, not to RLUSD. Treat any version of it attached to this token as a misreading.
Ripple USD risks
Single issuer, and that issuer is Ripple
The reserve, the minting and the redemption all sit with one company, and that company's fortunes are tied to XRP and to its own litigation history. The NYDFS charter constrains what Ripple can do with the reserve, which is the point of it, but it does not diversify the counterparty.
Freeze capability
A regulated issuer can freeze balances on legal instruction, and Ripple can. If your reason for holding a dollar token is censorship resistance, this is the wrong token; if your reason is that a regulator is watching the reserve, it is a feature.
Distribution is the open question
RLUSD's growth depends on Ripple's enterprise sales rather than on organic trading demand, and that is a narrower base than it looks. Exchange liquidity is thin relative to USDT and USDC, which means large redemptions route through Ripple rather than through the market — fine in calm conditions, untested in a rush.
Concentration on two chains
Native issuance on the XRP Ledger and Ethereum avoids the bridge risk that multi-chain tokens carry, and it also means RLUSD is absent from most of the places a stablecoin is used. That is a deliberate trade, and a limit on how large the float can get.

Ripple USD FAQ
What is RLUSD?
+
A US dollar stablecoin issued by Ripple under a New York Department of Financial Services trust charter, backed one-for-one by segregated cash, US Treasuries and cash equivalents. It launched in December 2024 and runs natively on both the XRP Ledger and Ethereum.
RLUSD vs XRP — what is the difference?
+
XRP is a volatile bridge asset that exists for seconds inside a cross-border payment to convert one currency into another. RLUSD is a stable dollar claim you can hold. They are complementary: a payment can bridge through XRP and settle in RLUSD. A dollar token cannot do XRP's job, and XRP cannot do RLUSD's.
Does RLUSD replace XRP?
+
No. Ripple built RLUSD to be the dollar leg of payments its own corridors settle, with XRP as the bridge between non-dollar currencies. The two are designed to appear in the same transaction, not to substitute for one another.
Is RLUSD safe?
+
The reserve is conservative and the NYDFS charter brings examination, composition rules and a redemption obligation — a higher bar than an offshore attestation. The concentration is the risk: one issuer, thin secondary liquidity against USDT and USDC, and a freeze capability that comes with the charter.
What is the RLUSD market cap?
+
Around $2.37bn as of August 2026, from a standing start in December 2024. That is fast growth in absolute terms and still a small fraction of USDT's or USDC's float.
Which blockchains is RLUSD on?
+
The XRP Ledger and Ethereum, issued natively on each rather than bridged between them — which removes bridge risk and also keeps RLUSD off most other chains.
Where can I buy RLUSD?
+
Major exchanges list it and it trades on the XRP Ledger's native DEX, where it is the largest regulated dollar token. Liquidity is materially thinner than USDT or USDC, so check depth before sizing a trade.
