Immutable
Immutable is an Australian gaming tech company that runs Immutable Chain, the Passport wallet and an NFT orderbook, and sells AI growth tools to games.
Also known as Immutable X · Immutable zkEVM · Immutable Chain
The short answer
Immutable X, its original StarkEx rollup, was merged into Immutable Chain in early 2026 and is deprecated: it no longer takes new transactions. As of October 2026 the company says more than 800 games use its platform. The caveat for holders is that Immutable sets the bridge's withdrawal limits and takes a fixed 2% on every orderbook trade, and NFTs from the old chain moved only if each game migrated them.

What Immutable is and who is behind it
Immutable started as a blockchain company for games and is now two businesses under one name. The newer one, which leads its homepage in October 2026, is a growth platform: player data, attribution, campaign tools and an AI planning assistant for Steam, mobile and cross-platform games, most of which need no blockchain at all. The older one is the crypto stack the brand is known for: Immutable Chain, the Passport account and wallet, an NFT orderbook, an indexer and contract templates. Immutable says more than 800 games use its platform.
The contracting company in its terms is Immutable zk Pty Ltd, an Australian proprietary company. The terms are governed by New South Wales law, with arbitration in Sydney under ACICA rules, and Immutable's careers page refers to its Sydney office. The company's own pages reviewed for this profile do not name its founders, founding year, headcount or investors, so this profile leaves them out.
The IMX token is not issued by Immutable itself. Immutable's documentation names the IMX Ecosystem Foundation as issuer and staking provider. The imx.community site, published under Digital Worlds NFTS Ltd, covers governance votes and rewards.
What happened to Immutable X
Immutable X was Immutable's first network, a custom StarkEx rollup built with StarkWare that, according to Immutable's docs, processed hundreds of millions of transactions. In early 2026 it was merged into Immutable Chain through an upgrade of the bridge contract, and every part of it is now deprecated. Its sequencer no longer accepts new transactions, its read endpoints and explorer will be removed later, its marketplace has been taken down, and its SDKs are retired.
For holders, the docs say ETH, IMX and other ERC-20 balances on Immutable X were migrated directly to Immutable Chain and appear in the same wallet, whether MetaMask or Passport. NFTs are different: most were moved automatically, but many games wrote their own migration logic, so anyone missing an item has to ask that game, not Immutable. The migration contracts are on GitHub with an audit by Nethermind.
How Immutable Chain works
Immutable Chain, also called Immutable zkEVM, is an EVM-compatible network that settles to Ethereum. It uses chain ID 13371, pays gas in IMX, runs the Cancun EVM version and produces blocks with about two-second finality. Gas follows the EIP-1559 model with a minimum priority fee of 10 gwei, and games can sponsor gas so Passport players pay nothing. The overview page does not say who runs the sequencer or how proofs are produced, so the chain should be treated as operated by Immutable.
Assets cross from Ethereum through Immutable's canonical bridge, with Axelar carrying messages. The docs say ZK proofs for the bridge are planned. Deposits take about 15 to 30 minutes and withdrawals up to 24 hours. Each token has a four-hour withdrawal limit and a large-withdrawal threshold: for ETH those are 148 and 29.6 ETH. A withdrawal over the threshold waits 24 hours, and if total withdrawals in a window pass the limit, all withdrawals queue until Immutable reviews them manually. That is a safety brake against an exploit, and it is also a point of control. Third-party routes through LayerSwap and Squid are listed as alternatives.
Immutable fees: Orderbook and royalties
Games and marketplaces on Immutable Chain share one orderbook built on the Seaport contract. Royalties are enforced at protocol level, so creators are paid on every secondary sale, not only when a buyer agrees. Fees are paid by the buyer and deducted from the seller's proceeds.
In the docs' worked example, a 1 IMX sale with a 5% royalty and 0.01 IMX each for maker and taker leaves the seller 0.91 IMX. Immutable recommends keeping total fees under 15%. A first listing in each collection needs a one-time approval for the Seaport contract, which is worth understanding before signing; see how token approvals work. For how the orderbook compares with general marketplaces, see how Immutable compares with other NFT marketplaces.
| Fee | Rate | Paid to |
|---|---|---|
| Protocol fee | 2%, non-negotiable | Immutable |
| Creator royalty | Set per collection; docs suggest 2-5% for game items, 10% recommended maximum | Collection creator, single wallet |
| Maker fee | Set by the listing marketplace; no protocol cap | Marketplace that created the listing |
| Taker fee | Set by the filling marketplace; no protocol cap | Marketplace that filled the order |
Passport wallet and custody
Passport is the account most players meet. Signing in with Google, Apple or email creates a wallet automatically, with no seed phrase or browser extension, and the same wallet works across Immutable games. Immutable describes Passport as non-custodial: users own their keys, and Immutable acts as a co-signer that enforces security policies but cannot move funds without the user's consent.
Two limits matter. Passport fully supports only Immutable Chain mainnet and testnet, and on Ethereum it supports only 'ejecting' assets, so funds sent to Passport on another chain may be stuck. And deleting a Passport account makes the wallet and everything in it irrecoverable, with deletion taking up to 30 days. Move assets to another wallet first. The overview does not say how key shares are split, so a player relying on Passport is also relying on Immutable's sign-in service staying up.
The IMX token and staking
IMX exists as an ERC-20 on Ethereum at 0xf57e7e7c23978c3caec3c3548e3d615c346e79ff and as the native gas token on Immutable Chain, with a wrapped version (wIMX) at 0x3a0c2ba54d6cbd3121f01b96dfd20e99d1696c9d. Holders vote on Snapshot proposals. According to imx.community, 20% of protocol fees paid in IMX are set aside as rewards for stakers who also take part in network activity. Staking terms, rates and lockups are published at imx.community/staking, not in Immutable's docs.
Buying IMX on an exchange is a token purchase, not an investment in Immutable zk Pty Ltd. Check any contract address against Immutable's docs before swapping, because tokens with a copied name or ticker can be created by anyone.
Risks and security
No exploit of Immutable's bridge or chain was disclosed in the documentation reviewed for this profile. That review did not include a full news search.
- Operator control: Immutable runs the chain's infrastructure and can queue bridge withdrawals for manual review.
- Migration gaps: NFTs from Immutable X depend on each game's migration, and Immutable X read access will be switched off.
- Account risk: a deleted or lost Passport sign-in can mean losing the assets in it.
- Business focus: the homepage now leads with non-blockchain growth tools, so the crypto products are one line of a wider business.
- Audits: the bridge has a Trail of Bits audit and Perimeter fuzzing reports, and the migration a Nethermind audit, all published on GitHub. An audit lowers risk but does not guarantee the contracts.
Support and official channels
Player and account issues go to [email protected], and formal complaints to [email protected], both named in the terms. Developer documentation is at docs.immutable.com, which links Immutable's X account (@immutable) and GitHub. Problems with a specific game's items usually need that game's own support, especially for assets from Immutable X.

Questions people ask
Is Immutable X still working?
No. Immutable X was merged into Immutable Chain in early 2026. Its sequencer stopped taking new transactions, its marketplace was removed, and its explorer and read endpoints are scheduled for removal. Token balances were moved to Immutable Chain in the same wallet. NFTs were moved by most games, but some used their own process, so check with the game.
Is Immutable a business-to-business or consumer company?
Mostly business-to-business. It sells growth, analytics and blockchain tools to game studios, and its terms and fees are written for them. Players deal with Immutable mainly through Passport accounts and when trading items, where the 2% orderbook fee and creator royalties apply. Most consumer contact happens inside the games themselves.
Where can I trade Immutable game items?
On marketplaces and in-game shops connected to the Immutable orderbook, which share the same listings. The old Immutable X marketplace has been removed. Because listings are shared, an item listed in one connected marketplace can be bought through another, and each side's marketplace may add its own maker or taker fee on top of the 2% protocol fee.
