Is Coinbase safe? What its own filings say

A listed company has to disclose risks its private competitors can leave unsaid. The most useful sentence about Coinbase is one Coinbase wrote.

Coinbase is the most regulated venue an American can use, the most expensive one we measured, and the only large exchange whose risk disclosures you can read in full — because it is a public company and legally has to write them.

That last point is the reason this question is easier to answer for Coinbase than for almost any competitor. The information is not a leak or an estimate. It is in the filings.

What is genuinely strong

  • It is a US-listed public company with audited financial statements — a standard no offshore exchange in our rating meets.
  • It serves all 50 states, which very few venues do. Most of the market either excludes New York, routes Americans to a separate thinner platform, or excludes the US entirely.
  • It states that customer crypto is held on a one-to-one basis and is not lent or rehypothecated, and that customer fiat is held in custodial accounts at FDIC-insured banks.
  • It has no history of losing customer funds to a platform breach, across more than a decade.

The sentence worth reading

Coinbase's own filings disclose that in the event of bankruptcy, custodially held crypto assets could be considered property of the bankruptcy estate, and customers could be treated as general unsecured creditors.

This is widely quoted as evidence that Coinbase is unsafe. It is better read the other way round: the same legal question hangs over every custodial exchange, and Coinbase is one of the few obliged to spell it out. A private offshore competitor faces the identical risk and has no duty to describe it to you.

What it does mean is concrete: an exchange balance is a claim on a company, however well run. That is the argument for holding long-term positions yourself, which we work through in where to keep your crypto.

What it does not publish

Coinbase does not publish a customer-level proof of reserves — no Merkle tree, no liability-inclusive attestation you can check your own balance against. Its answer is the audited financials of a listed company, which is a different and in some ways stronger instrument, but it is not the same thing.

Kraken publishes both a liability-inclusive proof of reserves attested by a named accounting firm and operates under US regulation. That combination is why it, not Coinbase, leads our table on custody evidence.

The price of all this

When we priced the same $10,000 buy across live order books, Coinbase came out at roughly 0.60% effective cost — about six times the cheapest venue we measured. On $10,000 that is around $60 against roughly $10.

Whether that is worth paying depends entirely on what you are doing. For a long-term buyer making a few purchases a year, it is a small premium for the strongest regulatory position available in the US. For anyone trading with any frequency, it compounds into a large number, and the full cost comparison shows how quickly.

The bankruptcy language is not evidence that Coinbase is worse. It is evidence that Coinbase had to tell you.

The short version

Coinbase is safe in the ways that are easiest to verify — audited, listed, licensed across all 50 states, with no history of losing customer funds. It is expensive, it does not offer a customer-verifiable proof of reserves, and like every custodian, a balance held there is a claim on the company rather than an asset you control.

Frequently asked questions

Is Coinbase safe to use?+

It is the most transparently regulated venue available to Americans: a US-listed public company with audited financials, licensed in all 50 states, with no history of losing customer funds to a breach. It is also the most expensive exchange we measured, and like any custodian it holds your balance as a claim against the company.

What happens to my crypto if Coinbase goes bankrupt?+

Coinbase's own filings disclose that custodially held crypto could be treated as property of the bankruptcy estate, with customers ranking as general unsecured creditors. The same legal risk applies to other custodians; Coinbase is simply required to disclose it. Holding long-term positions in a wallet you control removes the exposure.

Does Coinbase have proof of reserves?+

Not in the customer-verifiable sense. It does not publish a Merkle-tree proof you can check your own balance against. Instead it relies on audited financial statements as a public company — a different form of evidence, and one no offshore exchange provides.

Why is Coinbase more expensive than other exchanges?+

Its published fee schedule is higher and the effective cost we measured on a $10,000 order-book buy was about 0.60%, roughly six times the cheapest venue. Part of that pays for US regulatory compliance across 50 states; part is simply pricing power in a market where most users never compare.
