The short answer
Morpho Blue is the best answer in this rating to the upgradeability problem: a deliberately minimal, immutable primitive with isolated markets, so neither the developers nor a governance vote can reach into your market and change its terms. Upgradeability scores 9 out of 10 and coverage 10 out of 10. The honest qualification is that the risk moved rather than vanished — most depositors never touch the primitive, they deposit into curated vaults, where a third party chooses which markets their money enters.

Immutability, and where the risk actually went
Every other lending protocol we rate asks you to trust a governance process that can change the rules of a market you are already in. Morpho Blue does not have one. It is a minimal, immutable primitive: a market’s parameters are fixed when it is created, and neither the developers nor a token vote can reach in and alter them afterwards. Upgradeability scores 9 out of 10, the highest in our DeFi rating.
That is a genuine structural answer to a real problem — Compound’s 2021 governance bug distributed $80m by mistake, and Aave’s upgradeable contracts score 6 for the same underlying reason.
Here is the qualification the marketing does not lead with. Most depositors never interact with the immutable primitive. They deposit into curated vaults, where a third party decides which markets the money enters and on what terms, and can change that allocation. So the trust you did not have to place in Morpho’s governance, you place in a curator instead.
That is not a criticism of the design so much as a description of how it is used. The primitive is genuinely immutable and the risk did not disappear; it moved one layer up, from a protocol governance process to a vault curator, and became less visible in the process. Anyone depositing should know which of the two they are actually using, and most do not.
What the scores say
Coverage takes 10 out of 10 on both cards, the only protocol to do so — the permissionless market creation that makes Morpho Blue immutable also makes it trivially extensible, so anything can have a market.
Liquidity scores 9 out of 10 on the lending card and scale 9 on the protocol card, which for a protocol launched in 2021 against Aave’s 2017 is a fast ascent.
Record scores 7 out of 10, and the reason is simply time. Aave takes 10 because six years as the industry’s most obvious target produced no depositor loss. Morpho has a shorter history, and no record can be earned faster than it accumulates.

Questions people ask
What is Morpho Blue?
A deliberately minimal, immutable lending primitive with isolated markets. A market’s parameters are fixed at creation, and neither the developers nor a governance vote can change them afterwards — which is why upgradeability scores 9 out of 10, the highest in our DeFi rating.
If Morpho is immutable, is it risk-free?
No, and this is the part worth understanding. Most depositors use curated vaults rather than the primitive, and a curator chooses which markets their money enters and can change that. The risk moved from protocol governance to a vault curator; it did not disappear, and it became less visible.
Morpho or Aave?
Aave has the record — six years, $18.39bn borrowed, no depositor loss, scoring 10 on record. Morpho has the structure — immutable markets nobody can alter, scoring 9 on upgradeability against Aave’s 6. One is proven, the other is better designed against the risk that proof cannot cover.
Why does Morpho score 10 on coverage?
Permissionless market creation. The same property that makes Morpho Blue immutable makes it trivially extensible — anyone can create a market for anything — so it reaches assets and chains that governance-gated protocols do not.
